The School of Medicine at SKKU opened in 1997 in collaboration with Samsung Medical Center. The SKKU-SOM has approximately 550 full-time faculty members. They engage in research and practice at one of the 28 departments, which are devoted to either basic medical science or clinical medicine.
SKKU-SOM has both an M.D. program and a Ph.D program in Biomedical Science, emphasizing the education of physicists as well as the training of future biomedical scientists. The Pre-Medicine Program (2 years) for MD students and the Masters and Ph.D program for Biomedical Science Program are carried out at the Natural Science Campus of SKKU in Suwon City. The clinical education (4 years) for MD students is processed at Samsung Medical Center, the training hospital for SKKU-SOM students.
The School of Medicine is acclaimed for its outstanding contribution to elevating the level of Korea's medical research to a global standard. The primary goal of the curriculum is to raise the competitive edge of medical students as humanitarian physicians and self-directed learners. The School of Medicine was the first to initiate the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) Program in medical education, which helps students to cope with situational problems by cultivating their risk-management skills.
SKKU-SOM has set the vision to become one of the top 50 Medical Schools in the world by 2020. In order to accomplish this goal, it is striving to expand its international network and to actively be engaged in international collaborations.
