Overview of SKKU
Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU), established in 1398, is the oldest university in Asia and among the top-ranking private universities in Korea. Now in the 21st century, SKKU has modernized and made substantial advances towards becoming a global leader in research and education. Our University Foundation, Samsung, has established a number of strategic research programs with SKKU.
Sungkyunkwan University takes pride in innovative spirit. As a result of the long efforts to place natural sciences on an equal footing with our strong foundation in humanities, SKKU now operates two campuses: the Humanities and Social Sciences Campus and the Natural Sciences Campus. Based on a highly successful partnership with Samsung, which has generously funded several core initiatives, the University has been rapidly developing and prospering since 1996.
According to the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology of Korea, SKKU is currently ranked 17th in Asia and 140th in the world (QS, 2014). Under the mission of "VISION 2020", SKKU is paving grounds for a number of key projects for increased international cooperation with the support of Samsung.
History and Old Sungkyunkwan
Sungkyunkwan University was founded in 1398 as the highest national educational institute in the early years of the Joseon Dynasty in Korea. As the oldest university in East Asia, it has fostered leaders of our society for over 600 years. '修己治人', pronounced as 'Su-Gi-Chi-In,' SKKU's main ideology, teaches that SKKU students should strive to perfect themselves as leaders and contribute to our society. This ideology is the fundamental principle by which SKKU has been bringing up leaders of our society for over 600 years, thus contributing to the growth of our society. SKKU aims to educate future global leaders equipped with this ideology so that it will further contribute to the international community. Under the catch-phrase 'Unique Origin Unique Future,' Sungkyunkwan University continuously pursues to integrate its foundational philosophy with modernization to cultivate global citizens who will lead in to the 21st century.
